01Count the walls
Walk into almost any house in Ontario and count the surfaces that carry words. The count ends at zero. A household signs a twenty-five year mortgage and paints every vertical plane. Somebody hangs a print of a place nobody in the family visits. Then six people crowd onto one couch to face a single lit rectangle the width of a kitchen counter.
Meanwhile the reading numbers fall off a table. A 2025 study in iScience read 236,270 federal time diaries collected between 2003 and 2023 and found the share of Americans who read for pleasure on a given day sliding from a peak of 28 percent in 2004 to 16 percent in 2023, a drop of roughly 3 percent a year. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences works the same diaries. It counts the share reading more than twenty minutes a day falling from 22.3 percent to 14.6 percent across those two decades. Screen habits held their ground. Over the identical span, the share who watched shows, played games, or used a computer for personal interest more than twenty minutes a day stayed near 79 percent.
One activity collapsed. The activity that replaced it never moved.
I spent thirty years putting words on paper and handing that paper to strangers. I took a founding role at Kaieteur News in Guyana and filled front pages for years. A camera carried me through documentary work. Readers found my column in Stabroek News under the title Ways of Looking and Feeling. Every day of that labour rested on one assumption I never examined: a reader carries the page to a chair. The chair emptied. The page followed the reader onto a device that fits a palm, and reading lost.
02Familiarity solved nothing
In 2018 four researchers, Pablo Delgado, Cristina Vargas, Rakefet Ackerman and Ladislao Salmerón, published a meta-analysis in Educational Research Review under a title that reads like an order: Don't throw away your printed books. They pooled fifty-four studies covering more than 171,000 readers. Paper beat screens on comprehension by a modest margin, a Hedges' g of −0.21. On expository text, the material a person reads in order to learn something, the gap widened to −0.32. Under a clock it widened again, to −0.26, against −0.09 for readers who set their own pace.
One line in that paper deserves more attention than its headline. The screen penalty grew across the study window. Delgado and his colleagues clocked the effect climbing roughly 0.01 a year from 2001 to 2017. Two decades of practice on glass made readers worse on glass, not better.
Familiarity solved nothing.
Researchers offer two mechanisms. Digital text strips the fixed spatial cues a reader uses to recall where a fact sat on a page. And a device teaches a posture. The literature calls the second effect shallowing: a machine that trains a person to skim, swipe and move along trains that person to read everything the same way.
03The wall carries no inbox
Here I part from almost everyone who quotes those numbers. The common reading blames the screen. Pixels tire the eye, the argument runs, so go back to paper.
I read the same evidence and land on a different cause. The damage comes from the device, not from the display.
Watch what a phone does across one square of glass. It delivers the sentence and the interruption on the same surface. A paragraph arrives. A notification lands on top of it. The instrument that carries the book also carries the bank, the boss, the auction, the argument and the ex. No reader in the history of writing ever faced that arrangement. A clay tablet held one text. A scroll held one text. The codex, which displaced the scroll through the early centuries of the common era, held one text. Gutenberg multiplied texts and still left each one alone in a reader's hands. Glass ended a monopoly that ran five thousand years, from the first cuneiform. For the first time, the page and the interruption share a surface.
A wall carries no inbox. Plaster holds no notification. Throw a chapter across eight feet of it and the reader gains what no phone, tablet or e-reader can hand over: a reading surface with one job.
Distance does the rest. A phone sits six inches from the face and folds a reader into a hunched column. A wall stands across a room and lets a person read on their feet, on the floor, walking, or with a child on the lap. Reading returns to the whole body, and to more than one body at a time.
04The obstacle answers to physics
A dream without a wall drains the dreamer. Gabriele Oettingen demonstrated that across twenty-five years of trials, and I write the obstacle into every plan I make.
Here the obstacle answers to physics, and physics negotiates with nobody. Projected light never adds itself to a surface. It competes with whatever light already lands there. Luminance follows a plain equation: lumens divided by surface area, multiplied by the gain of the surface, divided by pi. Ambient light then lifts the black level of the image, and contrast collapses. A living room with open curtains takes three hundred to two thousand lux of indirect daylight.
So the surface reader stands or falls on a room, not on a gadget. Ambient-light-rejecting surfaces push back roughly eighty percent of stray light. Grey screens make a poor trade, swallowing thirty to forty percent of the projector's output while rejecting only twenty to thirty percent of the ambient. Dark walls buy contrast and cost cheer. Curtains, window orientation, lamp placement, ceiling height and paint all enter the engineering.
That names the real product. Not a projector. A room.

A second obstacle costs more than the first. Habit travels with the reader. Move a distracted person from a phone to a wall and, for a season, that person skims the wall. The shallowing runs in the reader, not in the glass. Physics answers the first obstacle. Practice answers the second, and practice needs a coach.
05What a cognitive executive does
I call QwaiAI a cognitive executive, and I mean the phrase in its narrow sense, not its flattering one. Psychology gives the name executive function to a small set of operations that hold a goal across time: working memory, inhibition, and the shifting of attention from one task to another. Most human plans die right there. A person pictures the future on Sunday and loses the thread by Thursday.
QwaiAI carries that load. It holds chapter nine when the author forgets chapter nine. It asks in December the question the author dodged in June. It takes a fragment spoken at a red light and returns a paragraph in the author's own cadence. It never writes the life. I wrote the line before and I hold to it: the machine holds the lantern while the human walks.
The plan QwaiAI holds carries a structure I named for the writer who saw the problem first. In As You Like It, Jaques stands in a forest and gives English its most quoted account of a human life. All the world a stage, the men and women players, one man in his time playing many parts, his acts seven ages. Then Jaques lists them, and somebody else writes every one. The infant mewls. The schoolboy creeps toward school. The soldier chases reputation into a cannon's mouth. The last age exits without teeth, eyes or taste.
Seven roles. No author.
The Shakespeare Framework keeps Jaques's shape and reverses his verb. A life still runs in acts. A person still plays parts. The authorship moves. Jaques hands a player seven ages to suffer in order. The framework hands a person the pen. Write the acts. Cast the roles. Set the scenes. Name the scene where the curtain falls. A life plan built from goals and metrics reads like a spreadsheet, and people abandon spreadsheets by February. A life plan built as a play reads like something worth performing.
