The Aspirational Story

For thirty years I earned my living out of yesterday, helping found a national daily in Guyana, building newsrooms across two countries, and writing a column in Stabroek News under the heading Ways of Looking and Feeling. The trade drills one reflex deeper than any other: report the event after it happens, check every name, date the record, and never print the thing you wish. That reflex protects a newspaper, and it quietly ruins a person.
A newspaper runs on documentation, but a human life does not, because a person walks forward out of a sentence that nobody has yet finished writing. I want to argue that proposition here with verified numbers rather than with enthusiasm, since we handed the wrong instrument to that unfinished sentence, and the substitution now costs our civilisation more than anyone bothers to count.
01Sixteen minutes
Begin with a single count from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics: during 2025, Americans aged fifteen and over read for personal interest an average of sixteen minutes a day, while that same population watched television for two hours and thirty-six minutes.
Researchers at University College London and the University of Florida pushed the observation back across two decades, analysing the daily time diaries of 236,270 Americans and publishing their results in iScience in August 2025. The proportion who read for pleasure on an average day collapsed from about twenty-eight percent in 2004 to roughly sixteen percent in 2023, a decline holding near three percent every year. Black Americans, households with lower income, adults with less schooling, and communities outside metropolitan centres fell furthest and fastest.
Now set a second count beside the first one. The Association of American Publishers valued United States publishing revenue at 33.4 billion dollars for 2025, with digital audiobooks climbing 5.3 percent to 2.5 billion and ebooks climbing about three percent to 2.2 billion. Across the five years ending in 2024, however, digital audio revenue grew 78.1 percent while ebook revenue grew 2.0 percent.
Read those two figures together, because between them they carry the entire diagnosis: over five identical years, one digital format expanded by more than three quarters, and the other barely moved.
Audio demonstrates that readers never abandoned books, so the ebook stalled for a different reason. It never performed one function that a printed codex could not already perform. Engineers took paper, slid it behind glass, and preserved the line, the page, the spine, and the unbroken track running from first word to last. They shipped a photograph of a technology, and then they called the photograph a technology.
02The wrong imperative
Widen the aperture now, because those reading numbers sit inside a much larger failure.
Gallup interviewed 141,444 employed people across more than 160 countries during 2025, and found that twenty percent of them reported engagement at work. That share slid from twenty-three percent in 2022, and last year not one region on earth gained ground. Gallup prices the resulting shortfall near ten trillion dollars a year, close to nine percent of world economic output, while forty percent of employees reported heavy stress the previous day and twenty-two percent reported loneliness.
Economists read that table as a productivity problem. I read the identical table as a story problem.
Four of every five working adults surrender the largest block of their waking hours to an arrangement they would never choose twice, because we taught them one sentence about their own lives: earn, survive, retire, repeat. Call that sentence the existential economic imperative. It answers the question of how a person eats, and it never answers the question of what a person authors.
03Drucker saw half the problem, Bloom saw the other half
Peter Drucker published Managing Oneself in the Harvard Business Review in 1999, drawing the piece from Management Challenges for the 21st Century, and he watched the ground shift underneath every career in the industrialised world. Companies had stopped charting anybody's path, working lives now stretched close to fifty years, and so each knowledge worker, Drucker argued, must operate as a personal chief executive officer, answering five uncomfortable questions about strengths, working method, values, placement, and contribution.
Then Drucker named the structural break underneath all of it. Organisations used to outlast the people working inside them, but now, he wrote, knowledge workers outlast organisations and move freely between employers, and he called that reversal a revolution in human affairs.
Harold Bloom opened How to Read and Why in 2000 with a question he lifted from the Book of Job: information floods us without limit, so where does a person find wisdom? Bloom answered with reading, and with a precise claim about the work that reading performs, holding that deep and constant reading establishes and enlarges a self capable of standing alone.
Put the two men inside one room. Drucker hands you a career you must run yourself, and Bloom hands you a shelf that grows the self who runs it, yet neither man closed the circuit between them. Drucker gave the person a job to manage, Bloom gave the person other people's books to read, and nobody handed the person an instrument for writing the single book that governs everything else: the story of the life still ahead.
I call that book the aspirational story.
04What the evidence carries, and what it drops
An aspirational story documents no past. It drafts a specific future in exact language, then pulls its own author toward the page.
Psychologists have measured a miniature version of that move for two decades under a plain name, the Best Possible Self exercise, in which a person writes about a future where sustained effort finally paid off, and then keeps writing. Alba Carrillo and colleagues pooled twenty-nine controlled studies covering 2,909 participants in PLOS One in 2019, and measured against control conditions, the writing lifted optimism (d = .33), wellbeing (d = .33), and positive affect (d = .51). Those effects run small to medium, and they mostly run short.
Purpose reaches much further. In July 2026, Angelina Sutin and colleagues at Florida State University published the largest examination so far in Psychological Medicine, combining eight ongoing longitudinal studies with seventeen published samples to reach 488,765 people, 48,928 deaths, and follow-up periods extending as long as thirty-two years. Participants scoring higher on purpose in life carried roughly a thirty percent lower risk of earlier death, and an earlier pool of ten studies covering 136,265 people had already pointed the same direction.
Now the wall, and I will print it rather than bury it. In May 2026, Richard Sias and Harry Turtle published a paper in PLOS One reading the same literature hard against the grain: adjust for objective baseline health, exclude the people already ill, and the hazard ratio for low purpose falls from 2.59 toward one, with the confidence interval crossing it. Illness drains purpose out of a person, and that mechanism alone can manufacture much of the correlation.
I accept the correction, then I keep the smaller claim surviving it. A written future buys nobody additional years of life, but a written future changes what a person does on a Tuesday morning, and direction rather than longevity carries this argument.
05The machine that helps, and the machine that harms
A second wall stands much closer to my own trade, and it carries the name artificial intelligence.
In June 2025, Nataliya Kosmyna and colleagues at the MIT Media Lab fitted fifty-four people with EEG caps and set them writing essays, assigning one group to ChatGPT, one group to a search engine, and one group to no tool at all. The results ran in one unmistakable direction: the AI group showed the weakest brain connectivity, reported the lowest ownership over their own essays, and struggled hardest to quote sentences they had typed minutes earlier.
The machine harmed nobody. It answered the questions that the writer never had to ask.
One finding inside that study matters far more than the headline, and almost nobody bothered to repeat it. The researchers ran a crossover session, and participants who first wrote three essays with no tools, and only afterward reached for the model, showed stronger recall alongside re-engaged networks across the visual and frontal cortex. Order decided the outcome. Human first and machine second, and the machine amplified the author; machine first and human second, and the author vanished.
Other researchers have since challenged that paper on sample size and EEG methodology, and the lead author herself rejected the brain-rot framing that the press bolted onto her work, so treat the finding as a strong signal rather than as settled law. The signal nonetheless points where I would expect: authorship survives whenever the human carries the cognitive load and hands the machine the executive work.
That distinction governs the whole design of QwaiAI, which ghostwrites nothing. QwaiAI takes the executive chair beside the desk and never takes the pen. It asks the questions a person dodges, checks the claims a person assumes, holds the record, structures the branches, tracks a twelve-month plan, and then hands the writing back.
