The wall came first
Someone walked into a limestone chamber on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi at least 51,200 years ago, mixed red pigment, and painted three human-like figures beside a warty pig. Archaeologists at Griffith University and Indonesia's national research agency dated that scene at Leang Karampuang using laser-ablation uranium-series imaging and published the result in Nature in July 2024. They call it the oldest known narrative artwork on earth [1]. Down the same karst, at Leang Bulu' Sipong 4, hunters carrying spears and ropes chase pigs and dwarf buffalo across a panel four and a half metres wide on the rear wall of the cave, dated to at least 50,200 years.
Read that detail again, because publishing forgot it. Humanity's first story arrived on a wall. Nobody bound it. Nobody carried it home. The audience walked into a room, and the room told the story. Firelight moved across the pigment, the figures shifted, and a listener probably spoke while others looked. Text, image, motion, voice and gathering all arrived in a single event, inside architecture.
Every technology that followed traded away part of that event to buy something else. Clay tablets bought durability and lost scale. Papyrus scrolls bought portability and lost the room. The codex bought random access and lost the panel. The printing press bought multiplication and lost the hand of the illuminator. The paperback bought cheapness and lost the folio. The phone bought ubiquity and lost almost everything except the letters themselves.
Call the pattern the surface law: every reading technology inherits the surface its distribution method allows, and readers adapt their attention to that surface, never the reverse. Shrink the surface and you shrink the encounter. The evidence sits in Figure 1 above.
part II ◆ scripture
God published on architecture
Christian readers carry an assumption so deep that few examine it: that God prefers the book. Scripture itself tells a different story about surfaces.
The first edition God authored landed on stone. Exodus records tablets written by the finger of God, an object of architecture rather than a scroll of convenience. Moses then delivered a command about where the words belong afterward. Deuteronomy 6 instructs Israel to teach the words to children, to speak them sitting in the house and walking by the way, and then adds the line that every architect should read twice:

God located the text on the doorframe. Not on a shelf. On the surface a family passes through several times a day, at the threshold where the household meets the street. Habakkuk pushes further and specifies the reason for scale:
Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.Habakkuk 2:2 ◆ King James Version
Read the design brief inside that verse. Write it large. Write it plain. Size the surface so a man moving at speed still catches the meaning. God specified legibility at velocity, which describes the qualped simsbook reader more accurately than any product sheet Qualped could draft.
The early church kept the practice. Around the year 600, Pope Gregory the Great wrote twice to Serenus, bishop of Marseilles, after Serenus smashed the images in his own cathedral. Gregory rebuked him with an argument about media: a picture does for the unlettered exactly what writing does for readers, and so a picture serves as a text [3]. Cathedral builders took him at his word for eight centuries. Stained glass, tympanum carving, fresco cycles and painted ceilings turned entire buildings into readable volumes. Historians still call the result the poor man's Bible. A peasant who could not spell walked into Chartres and read the whole redemptive arc off the walls and the light.
Print ended that arrangement quickly and, for a season, gloriously. Reading privatized, silenced and interiorized. The gain proved enormous. The loss went unmeasured. Qualped submits that the loss now shows up in the data, and that the technology to repay it finally exists.
part III ◆ the two inventors
Gutenberg recombined. Hart gave away.
Two men reinvented the book, five centuries apart, and each left a method worth copying more than a product worth admiring.
Johannes Gutenberg invented almost nothing from nothing. He worked as a goldsmith, so he already knew how to cut a steel punch and strike a matrix. Winegrowers along the Rhine already pressed grapes with a screw press, so he adapted the mechanism. Painters already ground oil-based pigment, so he formulated an ink that would cling to metal type and bite into paper. Italian mills already made rag paper. Gutenberg's genius lay in assembly. He gathered five existing crafts into one workflow and pointed the whole apparatus at a single text.
The scale of that first run deserves attention from anyone who dreams too small. Gutenberg, his financier Johann Fust, the scribe Peter Schöffer and roughly twenty-five assistants spent about three years producing around 180 copies of a 1,272-page Latin Vulgate. The job consumed more than 16,000 pieces of type, some 49,000 sheets of paper and 11,000 sheets of vellum [2]. One scriptorium took the same year to produce one copy. Gutenberg produced 180.
Michael Stern Hart took the opposite route. On 4 July 1971, a student at the University of Illinois held an operator's account on a Xerox Sigma V mainframe in the Materials Research Lab, a machine that happened to sit on one of the first nodes of the network that became the internet. Friendly operators had granted him computer time later valued at a hundred million dollars. Hart walked home from the fireworks, dug through his backpack for something to eat, and found a faux-parchment copy of the Declaration of Independence handed out free at a grocery store ahead of the Bicentennial. He typed all 1,300 words into the mainframe and released the file [4].
Hart built no reader, no store, no format war. He built a file and a permission, and he named the principle replicator technology: anything entered into a computer replicates without limit. Project Gutenberg followed, and today distributes more than 75,000 volumes.
Put the two methods side by side and a founding instruction appears. Gutenberg teaches recombination. Assemble crafts that already exist and aim them at one text. Hart teaches generosity and a start date. Publish one work, give it away, and let the form recruit its own believers. Qualped follows both. The QSR recombines projection optics, wireless streaming, spatial mapping and a language model, none of them new. The first simsbook goes out to a founding circle rather than to a market.
part IV ◆ the evidence
Attention did not die. It changed address.
Publishing tells itself a story about a distracted generation. The federal time-use data tells a story about a surface mismatch.
Researchers analysed twenty years of the American Time Use Survey, covering 236,270 respondents, and published the results in iScience in 2025. Daily participation in reading for pleasure fell about three percent a year across two decades [5]. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences ran the same source and found the share of intensive readers, meaning anyone reading more than twenty minutes a day, dropping from 22.3 percent in 2003 to 14.6 percent in 2023. Power readers, above forty-five minutes, slid from 15.3 percent to 10.7 percent. In 2023, 84 percent of Americans read five minutes or less on a given day [6].
Now hold the comparison the same dataset supplies. Across those identical twenty years, the share of Americans who watched, gamed or used a computer for personal interest more than twenty minutes a day held steady near 79 percent. Among fifteen to twenty-four year olds, 9.5 percent read more than twenty minutes a day for pleasure. Almost 80 percent of that same age group spent more than twenty minutes on screens.

No attention crisis explains that gap. Attention moved to the surfaces that carry motion, colour, voice and scale. Publishing kept selling a monochrome rectangle of 0.07 square metres and blamed the audience.
Cognitive science mapped the mechanism decades ago. Richard Mayer at UC Santa Barbara built the cognitive theory of multimedia learning on a simple finding: people learn more deeply from words plus graphics than from words alone. Mayer reports a median effect size of d = 1.39 for that multimedia principle across his transfer studies, and d = 1.67 across five computer-based comparisons [7]. A 2025 meta-analysis across many media types reports more conservative figures, g = 0.39 for the multimedia principle overall, so honest reporting requires the range rather than the headline. That same meta-analysis, though, records g = 0.82 for the modality principle and g = 0.70 for personalization [8]. Mayer's own count puts the modality principle at d = 0.88 across thirty-five experiments: spoken words paired with graphics outperform printed words paired with graphics.
Translate that finding into a device specification. A projected image with a narrated voice track beats a projected image with printed captions. The simsbook therefore treats recorded voice as a first-class channel rather than an accessibility afterthought, and the market agrees. American audiobook publishers reported $2.43 billion in 2025 revenue, a nine percent rise that extends fifteen straight years of year-on-year growth, across more than 750,000 active titles, up 43 percent in a single year. An estimated 157 million American adults, 58 percent, have listened to at least one [9].
One more result reframes the wall itself. Martin Dresler and colleagues at Radboud University trained fifty-one people with no mnemonic experience in the method of loci, the ancient practice of placing material at locations along a familiar route. Forty half-hour sessions across six weeks moved average recall from roughly 26 words to 62 words out of 72. World-ranked memory athletes scored 71. Brain connectivity in the trained group began to resemble the athletes', and the advantage survived four months without further practice [10].
Human memory runs on places. The codex asked the mind to store a world with no rooms in it. The projected simsbook hands memory back its architecture, and Qualped builds that principle into the device as room memory: chapter three always lands on the east wall, the map always occupies the floor, the genealogy always climbs the same corner. A reader walks the argument the way memory athletes walk a palace.
part V ◆ the economics
The book seeds every other medium and keeps almost nothing
Frontier Economics studied a decade of British screen and stage output for the Publishers Association. Between 2007 and 2016, published material formed the basis of 52 percent of the top twenty highest-grossing films produced in the United Kingdom, and those films took 61 percent of the domestic box office gross and 65 percent of the worldwide gross among that group. Adaptations out-earned original screenplays by 44 percent domestically and 53 percent globally, worth an extra $91 million per film. High-end television series drawn from books pulled 58 percent higher viewership. Theatre adaptations sold nearly three times the tickets [11]. Stephen Lotinga, then chief executive of the Publishers Association, summarised it plainly, saying that often the best stories begin with a book.
Read those numbers as an author rather than as an economist. The book performs as the highest-yielding seedbed in the entire creative economy, and the author who planted it typically receives one option fee and a credit. Value flows downstream into studios, streamers, producers and merchandisers, and almost none of it flows back up into the pages that grew it.
Meanwhile a parallel economy grew up entirely outside publishing. Goldman Sachs Research sized the creator economy at roughly $250 billion in 2023 and projected $480 billion by 2027 across some fifty million creators, while noting that only about four percent of them clear $100,000 a year [12]. Millions of people now build audiences with no authored body of work underneath, while authors build bodies of work with no direct channel to an audience.
The simsbook closes that circuit. It merges the downstream media back into the source work, and it prints the author's asset ladder directly onto the reading surface.

What a simsbook does
A simsbook denotes an authored world that occupies surfaces, carries every channel, flows its own margin, and yields assets. Four laws govern the form, and the next section states them in full.
Publishing will object that this describes a film, or an app, or an exhibition. It describes none of them. A film hands the pace to a director. An app hands the structure to an interface. An exhibition hands the sequence to a curator. A simsbook keeps every one of those decisions with the author and the reader, which explains why Qualped builds a reader rather than a platform. The author composes the world. The reader sets the tempo, chooses the wall, walks the room, and stops whenever the sentence deserves a second look.
