Gallup interviewers knocked on doors, dialled numbers, and opened web forms across twenty-two countries and one territory from March 21, 2022 to April 12, 2024. They carried a questionnaire about the whole of a human life. Past the questions about money, health, marriage, and childhood, one line waited for every person who sat down: rate how well you understand your purpose in life.
The survey collected 207,920 answers to that line.

Harvard's Human Flourishing Program, Baylor University's Institute for Studies of Religion, Gallup, and the Center for Open Science ran the project together and called it the Global Flourishing Study. Tyler VanderWeele and Byron Johnson led it. They published the first wave on April 30, 2025. The instrument measured six domains: happiness and life satisfaction, mental and physical health, meaning and purpose, character and virtue, close social relationships, and financial stability. Country samples ranged from 1,473 people in Türkiye to 38,312 in the United States.
For four decades researchers drew wellbeing as a U. Young adults held the high left arm of the curve, midlife sagged, and old age climbed back. The new data flattens that left arm. Pooled flourishing runs level from age eighteen to forty-nine, then rises. Two of the ten items drag hardest on the young: mental health, and understanding one's life purpose. The pattern repeats across Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Purpose carries the weight there. The item asks nothing about salary, square footage, or job title. It asks whether a person can name a reason to rise.
Two months later the World Health Organization published the report of its Commission on Social Connection. One in six people on earth reports loneliness. Weak social connection tracks with more than 871,000 deaths a year, close to one hundred an hour.
So the species now grades its own flourishing with more precision than any generation before it. Governments fund the instruments. Journals publish the tables. Almost nobody hands one person a drawing for the life those tables keep grading.
A survey inspects a building. A drawing builds one.
We train architects for houses. We licence engineers for bridges. We certify accountants for money and surgeons for bodies. For the most complicated structure a person ever occupies, a life, we hand out slogans and wish each other luck.
I spent thirty years in the past tense. I helped start a newspaper in Guyana, published community papers in Ontario, made television, and wrote a column in Stabroek News until my farewell in November 2014. Journalism taught me to report what already happened and to report it without decoration. Then I reversed the trade. I spend my remaining years on the future tense. I run the method on my own life first, then publish the results in the open.
For most of history, life design cost too much. A person could hire an architect for a house. Nobody could hire a researcher, an editor, a strategist, a coach, a publisher, and a librarian for one ordinary life. Design work demands sustained attention from a trained mind across years, and that attention carried a price only institutions and rich families could pay.
That price collapsed. Stanford's 2025 AI Index put the number on paper: querying a model at GPT-3.5 quality cost $20.00 per million tokens in November 2022, and $0.07 per million tokens by October 2024. The cost fell more than 280-fold in roughly eighteen months. Sustained expert attention moved from a luxury purchase to a household utility inside two years.
Cheap intelligence changes less than the headlines promise, for one reason. A model answers questions. Almost nobody writes a question worth the answer. The scarce material in this decade sits in specification. A specification carries three parts: the next thing a person wants, the wall in the way, and the move that person makes when the wall arrives.
Psychology settled this point before the models arrived. Peter Gollwitzer and Paschal Sheeran pooled 94 independent tests in 2006 and found that if-then plans lifted goal attainment at d = .65, a medium-to-large effect. The same review scored getting started at d = .61 and resisting derailment at d = .77. Gabriele Oettingen went further and married the wish to the obstacle. A 2021 meta-analysis pooled 24 effect sizes and 15,907 participants across trials of mental contrasting with implementation intentions. The method lifted goal attainment at g = 0.34. When an experimenter walked participants through the steps in person, the effect climbed to g = 0.47.
Oettingen also measured what pure dreaming does to a body. In four studies published in 2011, she and Heather Kappes induced positive fantasies about an idealised future, then watched systolic blood pressure drop along with self-reported energy. The fantasy pays the nervous system in advance. The dreamer relaxes, then underperforms. Vision boards drain the very fuel they advertise.
Lay the three findings side by side. A wish moves almost nothing. A wish, plus a named obstacle, plus an if-then plan moves behaviour across health, school, and work. Specification does the labour, and inspiration collects the credit.
Every life runs on a specification. Someone writes it. DataReportal's Digital 2026 report counts the typical internet user inside social and video feeds for 18 hours and 36 minutes a week. Women aged 16 to 24 spend 25 hours and 45 minutes. Recommendation engines write a precise specification for those hours. Employers write one for the workday. Lenders write one for the next five years of income. A person who writes no specification still lives inside somebody else's drawing.

QwaiAI works as the cognitive executive. It holds the plan, asks the questions a person dodges, drafts, checks the record, remembers last month, and returns the work the next morning. It authors nothing. The name on the building stays yours.

The model carries real limits, and I name them. A blueprint lifts no bricks. QwaiAI amplifies a shallow specification as fast as a deep one. Membership buys tools, never discipline. Tuesday morning still costs a person Tuesday morning. Oettingen's research adds one more caution. Mental contrasting rewards a goal within reach, and pushes disengagement when the goal lies past reach. That release sometimes saves a person another wasted year.
Picture one Tuesday in 2030. I imagine this scene rather than report it.
Rain runs down a kitchen window in Oshawa at five fifty in the morning. A nurse fills the kettle and opens her tablet. Her Blueprint fills the screen: one sentence for the future she plans to occupy, one line for the wall, one line for the plan. The wall reads, "I quit at the second draft." The plan reads, "If Tuesday morning stalls, then I read the page aloud to the Club at eight." Qwai returns three questions from the night before, and the third one stings. She writes for forty minutes. At noon chapter nine of her simsbook enters the library. On Thursday a teacher in Georgetown reads it. By Friday eleven other authors return their notes.
When the fieldworkers reach her that year, they read the same line about purpose, and she answers with a number she built.
The fieldworkers return. The Global Flourishing Study plans five annual waves, so the same line travels to another two hundred thousand kitchen tables. Most people will answer from the life that arrived by default. A smaller number will answer from a drawing they made.
Answer with a drawing. Tonight, on a blank page, name the future you plan to occupy. Name the wall in front of your face. Write the one line you will follow on Tuesday morning. Then build.
